IC-M421 - One Powerful, Compact Class D DSC Radio
Making its debut at the Southampton Boat Show 2004 will be Icom's latest submersible combined fixed VHF/DSC transceiver, the IC-M421. Compact in size and easy to use, this new transceiver is ideal for pleasure craft, small commercial fishing boats or any user that requires Class D DSC equipped radio.
The IC-M421 is rated JIS-7 submersible and is ideal for small boats where space is at a premium and where water ingress on communication equipment has been a traditional challenge. It has a flush mount body and compact front panel that make it ideal for installation in a steering panel or bulkhead.
The uncomplicated display is a move by Icom to put usability at the top of the agenda. A large LCD (25 x 63mm) is incorporated into the design allowing easy viewing of the channel display and the scrolling 10-character channel name system even in direct sunlight, or when water has been splashed on the screen. In addition, the 3-step backlight for both the LCD and buttons allows the set to be seen in low-light conditions.
Along with DSC compatibility, the IC-M421 has other essential facilities, such as all channel access, dual and tri-watch and fast scanning. The radio comes with a standard waterproof remote function microphone to provide instant channel selection. The full dot-matrix display allows a host of information such as channel number, channel name, position and DSC data. The large, clearly labelled controls lend themselves to simple, intuitive operation allowing the user to make routine individual group and all ship calls with ease.
The IC-M421 is extremely compact, measuring only 164(W) x 78(H) x 139.5(D) mm. The IC-M421 has a large speaker grille, which gives excellent audio quality from the front-mounted speaker. This results in clear reception, even over wind or engine noise.

Digital selective calling features
The DSC uses a unique ID (MMSI code) similar to a telephone number. So you can make a contact with intended ID station or group directly or all ships in the area. When connected to an external GPS receiver, the position request and position report functions allow you to exchange ship”¦s position information. The polling (request/reply) function checks whether a specific ship is in communication range. A total of 100 address IDs can be programmed with 10-character address name and up to 40 received DSC messages (20 distress and 20 other calls) can be stored.

The IC-M421 has full dot-matrix display with up to 168-character capability that allows you to see a host of information such as channel number, channel name, position and DSC data etc. With the backlit display, the large buttons and knobs, the IC-M421 is easy to operate.
